A Big Bean Problem!

Today during math we explored place value and counting with beans.

I spilled a big bag of beans on the carpet and we worked together to count them up. While we were counting we discovered that we can think of numbers as groups of tens and ones ( 54= 5 tens and 4 ones). To keep track we make 10 sticks by gluing 10 beans on a craft stick.

This is an efficient way to count large numbers and decompose big numbers into its smaller parts.

These counting, place value, and decomposing skills are the foundation of addition and subtraction.
What a cooperative class! I was so impressed with the teamwork all the students displayed and how engaged the kids were! Walking around the room during this activity I could over hear so many math conversations!
