Happy 2015 and Welcome back!!

Hello first grade families and friends!

Happy new year! It feels like our break flew by --I am excited to see everyone in 2015! After the December break is a very special time for first graders --it is the time when families and educators see tremendous growth in children, both academically and socially!

I want to take a moment to share with you our upcoming units of study:

During our Math Workshop we will begin unit 5 --"Exploring Place Value"
(this is one of my favorite units to teach!! this is when math really begins to "click" for many young learners!)

Our Reading Workshop will focus on reading nonfiction, particularly narrative nonfiction books --think The Magic School Bus and Martin's Big Dream

Our Writing Workshop studies will be around writing nonfiction pieces. First graders will be exploring topics they are very interested in and become "experts" through research of these topics. Finally, we will write teaching books about a topic.

I hope your holidays were lovely, and I am looking forward to this exciting time of the year!

As always, please do not hesitate to email me with any questions, concerns or comments!

Best,
Courtney
